Best New Fiction: August 2013


The Boston area and much of New England has been suffering through an unbelievable heatwave these past few weeks.  I feel like I’m melting as I type this, sitting at my desk downstairs, in a room with no air conditioning.  It’s hard to focus.  Really, really hard.

Below you’ll find my hand picked choices for what I think looks like the best in fiction that the upcoming month of August has to offer.  There are some short stories, some VERY short stories, some translations from big time names, and there’s also the return of some of my favorite authors.  Oh, and there’s also a novel that’s actually titled “The Return.”  Go figure.

I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus by S.G. Browne


Gonna find out who’s naughty or nice

Author S.G. Browne arrived on the literary scene in 2009 with his novel Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament.  Seamlessly blending elements of horror and black comedy, and featuring a non-traditional writing style that utilized fragmented sentences and repeated phrases to emphasize his protagonist’s slanted world view, this debut story would quickly establish Browne as a talent to watch.  It was a welcomed, intelligent piece, that was powered by an undercurrent of social commentary that helped elevate it above the majority of zombie tales that were flooding the market at the time.  But, as Andy the zombie point out in this brand new Christmas themed sequel:
